Kinesiotape was developed in the 1970’s by Keno Kase in Japan. The idea was that it acted like a second skin that influences the nervous system and fascial system beneath it. It acts by lifting the skin away from the tissues beneath it allowing a better circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. Blood carries nutrients that heal and power the muscles so increasing its blood flow can help muscles recover and heal more quickly.

Kinesiotape also has an effect on the lymphatic system helping with the drainage of swellings and the dispersal of bruising. This can help swelling either from chronic cases such as lymphedema or from an injury.
