Cold Laser Therapy

What is Cold Laser Therapy

Cold Laser therapy also known as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or PhotoBioModulation (PBM) uses low power laser light to aid the natural healing process of the body. It has been used for over 30 years and is widely used for the treatment of pain, wound healing and musculoskeletal conditions. Cold lasers should not be confused with surgical lasers; cold lasers cannot burn or harm the skin.

Treatments are quick, safe, painless and have no side effects. During treatment a probe is placed on skin at particular points on or relating to the damaged area and light, which is controlled for wavelength, power, pulsing rate and duration passes into the tissue.

Usually patients will see a result in 1-2 treatments. The number of treatments needed depends on the condition and its severity. Usually one to two treatments per week are needed in the beginning and then they taper off as the condition improves. Chronic conditions such as Osteoarthritis may need 'top ups' as and when you feel they are needed. It can work well as a stand alone treatment or can be used in combination with other therapies for further enhancement.

Cold Laser can be used on a variety of injuries on humans and animals. The wounds featured below show us how  amazing it is at promoting healing.  Warning - some are quite graphic.

How does Cold Laser work?

The physiological effects of laser therapy have been extensively researched. Particular wavelengths of light stimulate the body’s cells: initial absorption by the mitochondria leads to increased fibroblast cell proliferation and migration, with modulation of cytokine levels, growth factors, inflammatory mediators and increased tissue oxygenation - all part of the natural healing process. Essentially by directly treating the damaged tissue with appropriate light, laser therapy helps the body to heal itself. It is especially effective for chronic conditions, or where the immune system is compromised, as it can re-start a stalled healing process.

In addition to the local cellular effects, research on low level laser therapy has demonstrated both enhanced levels of endorphin release, and the suppression of pain messages previously sent to the brain. Combining these effects with those from its use in stimulating acupuncture and ‘trigger’ points, low level laser is an excellent therapy for treating pain. Special acupuncture tips can be fitted to the laser allowing acupuncture points to be stimulated without the use of needles.
